Chainlink

About

Chainlink is the industry-standard oracle platform that enables blockchain applications to securely connect with real-world data and systems. It provides decentralized oracle services that bring off-chain data onchain, power smart contract automation, enable cross-chain interoperability, and support institutional tokenization of assets. The platform serves as critical infrastructure for DeFi protocols, financial institutions, and enterprise blockchain applications requiring reliable external data feeds and computation.

Where Does Yield Come From?

Chainlink generates yield through a staking system. Participants lock up LINK tokens to help secure the oracle network and earn rewards in return.

The staking platform uses a variable reward rate. A fixed amount of rewards is shared among stakers based on how much the oracle services are being used (the "protocol fill rate"). If the system is fully used, the base reward rate is 4.5% per year, paid in LINK.

There are two main types of stakers:

  • Community stakers receive an effective 4.32% annual rate, because 4% of their rewards are automatically passed to node operators.
  • Node operator stakers earn the base rewards plus the extra delegation rewards from community stakers, proportional to their stake.

Rewards don't become available immediately. They are locked and gradually become claimable over a 90-day period.

The system also includes an alerting mechanism. If a staker spots and reports a valid oracle downtime issue, they can earn a bonus of 7,000 LINK. On the flip side, node operators who fail to perform can be penalized (slashed) 700 LINK each.

Looking ahead, the plan is to add user fees as another source of rewards, moving away from relying only on new token emissions. This aims to create a sustainable economic model for securing the oracle services.
